Protect your tools – Breckland

17 January 2011

Commercial vehicle owners are being urged to pay extra attention to their security measures following a spate of thefts.

In the last week, 11 vans were broken into in the following areas: Scarning, Dereham, Narborough, Necton, Swaffham, Shipdham and Bradenham.

Offender/s have removed tools, industrial equipment and cash from the vehicles.

Inspector Terry Lordan said: Officers are stepping up patrols to target thieves who are responsible for causing this series of break-ins, but we need the help of the community to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity around parked vehicles to us.

Van drivers are being reminded to always remove valuable items entirely from their vehicle when leaving it unattended, especially overnight.

Norfolk Constabulary offers the following advice to van owners:

  • Always lock your vehicle and make sure that windows are fully closed.
  • Don t leave items on display, lock away tools out of sight and black out windows to prevent window shopping.
  • Property mark tools and equipment with your house name/number and postcode.
  • Use an immobiliser and fit an alarm to the vehicle.
  • Ensure the vehicle is fitted with a robust lock.
  • Remove equipment and tools from your vehicle overnight, mark on your vehicle no tools left in vehicle overnight .
  • Park in a garage, on a driveway or in a well lit area at night.

If you have any information about the recent vehicle break-ins contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0845 456 4567 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

If a crime is in progress always call 999.
